More than a century at the service of Catholic women<\/h1>\n

Women from eleven countries found the International Union of Catholic Women’s Leagues with the aim of defending the faith, religious freedoms and promoting Catholic social action under the guidance of the Pope.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the interruption caused by World War I, the Union publicly resumes its work and continues to grow in number of organisations and international presence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pope Pius XI encourages the Union to continue its work and to collaborate with other organisations in defence of Christian and social values.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Union obtains consultative status with ECOSOC and other UN agencies, allowing the voices of Catholic women to be amplified on a global level.<\/span><\/p>\n

New statutes are approved and the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations (WUCWO) is officially established, representing millions of women across the five continents.<\/span><\/p>\n

The president of WUCWO participates as an auditor at the Second Vatican Council, bringing a woman’s voice to key issues such as the family and Christian formation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first regional conferences emerge and a stronger commitment to ecumenism and the promotion of women in all areas begins.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Holy See confirms WUCWO as a Public International Association of the Faithful, legitimising its mission to speak and act on behalf of the Church.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pilar Bellosillo: a woman of the Council<\/h1>\n

Pilar Bellosillo<\/h3>\n

Pilar Bellosillo was a woman deeply committed to her faith and to the Church. As president of WUCWO, she participated in the Second Vatican Council, not only as an auditor, but also as an active collaborator in the preparation of the constitution Gaudium et Spes and in the Commission on Marriage and Family.<\/p>\n

Her courageous and serene witness marked a turning point in the presence of women in ecclesial life. Lord God and our Father, we thank you for the <\/i>fruitful life of Pilar <\/i>Bellosillo<\/i>, for her testimony of dedication to the cause of the Gospel, for her love for the Church, and for her dedicated and important work for the path of renewal in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.<\/i><\/p>\n

We thank you for the impetus she gave to the\u00a0<\/i>Church’s laity and for her constant commitment to the promotion of women.<\/i><\/p>\n

Trusting in her intercession, we put in your\u00a0<\/i>hands the grace we ask you to grant us. Make us, too, courageous and committed witnesses of the faith. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.<\/i><\/p>\n
