This is the title of a reflection done by Lucy Joceylin Vokhiwa, <em>Catholic Women Association<\/em> \u2013 Malawi (WUCWO Board Member). And which is the impact of climate change on women?   <em>\u201cWomen are learning new skills that are transforming both their homes and the environment\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>There are various issues affecting the women in view of climate change, such as: depletion of forest reserves because women and girls taking long hours to fetch firewood; loss of decent lives to the survivors and family problems in the camp where women are using anything that can burn to cook like plastic papers &amp; bottles<\/em>\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The country<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Malawi, as a country, has experienced serious damage due to the impacts of climate change in the past few years \u2013 droughts, floods, erratic rains. Malawi depends on agriculture and mainly uses traditional farming methods. Poor land management, rapid deforestation on top of climate change have resulted in heavy soil erosion, with consequent effects on key socioeconomic sectors and consequently on women.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organisation in Malawi fully participates in the Campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/wucwo.org\/en\/ecology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>#WUCWOPlantingHope<\/strong><\/a>: and they planted <strong>over 9,000 tree in 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the Catholic women in Malawi doing to respond to this reality?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many communities, women are taking the lead in the fight against climate change. One of the most visible efforts is the planting and conservation of trees, creating green spaces that protect the soil, capture carbon, and bring new life to the land. Alongside this, women are learning and practicing modern farming methods that boost yields while caring for the earth. They are also discovering innovative cooking techniques that use less fuelwood, helping to preserve forests and reduce household costs.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This transformation goes deeper than practical skills\u2014it is about an \u201cecological conversion,\u201d inspired by the values of<\/strong><em><strong> Laudato Si\u2019<\/strong><\/em><strong>, inviting women to see themselves as caretakers of creation<\/strong>. Since 2021, during the CWA Annual Meeting in Dedza Diocese, women have partnered with the Teresian Sisters for hands-on training in biochar production. Biochar, made from plant waste like maize husks, sawdust, and crop residues, is becoming a sustainable and affordable alternative to chemical fertilizers.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These ongoing efforts are not just about saving money. <strong>They are about giving women the tools to become food self-sufficient, to feed their families with dignity, and to care for the earth at the same time<\/strong>. Step by step, these initiatives are planting hope\u2014alongside trees\u2014for a future where communities thrive in harmony with creation. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Evergreen Schools project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to the support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manosunidas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manos Unidas<\/a><strong> in Spain<\/strong>, the Catholic Women Association launched the <strong>Evergreen Schools Project<\/strong>, a creative initiative to inspire young people to care for the environment. The project\u2019s goal was simple but powerful: to equip students with the knowledge and skills to manage natural resources responsibly and take action to reduce the harmful effects of climate change. Through workshops, activities, and awareness campaigns, young people learned how their daily choices can help protect the planet\u2014turning classrooms into hubs of ecological awareness and hope for a greener future.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What needs to be done to see great impact?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Translating <em>Laudato Si\u2019<\/em> into local languages has opened the door for more people to deeply understand and live its message of care for our common home. This work goes beyond translation\u2014it is about promoting a true <strong>ecological conversion<\/strong>, inspiring communities to see creation as a gift to be cherished. Alongside this, there is a strong call to action for the Church to take a leading role in national climate change discussions, working hand in hand with religious and traditional leaders to inspire collective solutions.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At every level, people are being encouraged to plant trees, raise awareness about climate change, and take concrete steps<\/strong>\u2014rooted in faith\u2014to protect the environment. The <em>Catholic Women Association<\/em> continues to champion practical initiatives such as energy-efficient cookstoves and climate-smart agriculture, helping parishes and communities adopt sustainable practices. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vision is bigger than one parish or diocese.
