Married and mother of five children – including triplets – she combines her busy family life with a solid academic career. She has a PhD in Bioethics and has been teaching Philosophy of Law, Bioethics and Biolaw for over twenty-five years. Since 2005, she has also taught at the John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences at the Pontifical Lateran University, continuing to train generations of scholars and pastoral workers on the themes of life, family and human dignity.

What was it like to move from the university to working in the Dicastery? What change did it represent in your life?

It was a profound change, which helped me grow and allowed me to get back into the game after many years of teaching. Although I have always viewed my academic work as an ‘educational mission’ towards the younger generations, working in the Church requires a more pastoral and theological-spiritual perspective. Therefore, while on the one hand I was able to use many of my skills and the forma mentis I had previously acquired in the academic world, on the other hand I had to take on a more ecclesial perspective and change my style in order to interact with bishops and put myself at the service of a more direct mission of evangelisation.

After these years of work in the Dicastery, where do you think Family Ministry stands in the world today?

I see a certain concern in the Church. Family contexts have changed a lot in the last twenty years, and family pastoral care, as it has always been organised, is no longer suitable. Families struggle to live their faith and pass it on to their children, young people are no longer interested in marriage and do not marry, and there are enormous educational problems caused in part by the pervasiveness of smartphones, which we always have in our hands and which are destroying family relationships and the ability to transmit values. Therefore, we must work differently and start from the basics to rebuild relationships between people and recreate real communities of reference.

In recent years, however, we have identified some fundamental operating principles for pastoral care. The first is transversality, that is, the need for pastoral offices to work in synergy on issues concerning children, young people, the family, and human life. This means creating coordination and collaboration tables in diocesan contexts in order to have a shared vision of the objectives and projects for accompanying families in every stage of life.

A second principle is synodality, which means listening and sharing not only opinions or experiences, but also the Magisterium of the Church. The Church’s teaching on marriage, family and human life must be made known so that it can be understood and accepted. The younger generations are unfamiliar with it and need teachers who can show them the beauty of being Christian. If synodality means walking together, then the content of formation must also be transmitted in a clear and shared manner.

A third principle is continuity: people must be accompanied on their journey of faith throughout all stages of life, taking into account their family ties. We must avoid an individualistic approach even within the Church. Married couples, for example, need to be accompanied together in order to grow spiritually and remain united.

Today there are single-parent families, separated families… What is the greatest challenge for the Church in this context?

I see two major challenges. The first is to accompany the faithful, especially parents and families, so that they can recover their faith, live it and pass it on to their children. There is a lack of spiritual accompaniment of the faithful. We need to train priests, religious and lay people for this purpose.

The second challenge is the need to prepare the clergy more adequately, in seminaries and through ongoing formation, so that they are better able to accompany families in their interior discernment. We need to recover the munus docendi of the ordained ministry: not only accompanying people to the sacraments, but first and foremost accompanying them in the faith. St. Basil said, “First you become a disciple of the Lord, and then you receive Holy Baptism.” The same applies to the sacrament of marriage, which today is entered into too lightly and with little concern for the faith of the bride and groom. But without faith, marriage risks not being fruitful. This is one of the reasons why so many marriages fail today.

Pope Leo XIV seems to attribute great importance to this issue…

Yes, he is insisting very much on the need to learn to live in the presence of God, to speak to Him in our hearts, to think of Him at every moment of the day. Only in God can true Christian discernment take place in daily life. This is what pastors must know how to accompany families towards: a “pedagogy of discernment”.

Speaking specifically about women, today it is very difficult to harmonise family, personal life and work. What suggestions would you give to young women?

In addition to the necessary socio-economic changes, I believe it is essential to develop a pedagogy of virtues, especially fortitude and meekness.

Fortitude is the capacity for sacrum facere: making every action sacred, giving deep meaning to every effort, knowing that it is full of meaning because it is part of a greater life project, in our Christian vocation as women, whatever our state of life.

Meekness is not weakness, but walking in trust in God. It is a key word, especially for us mothers and wives: recognising that we cannot control everything and placing our concerns in God’s hands. As I wrote on a note that I keep in my bedside table so that I never forget it: “Entrust everything to God and then go to sleep”.

How can women’s and family associations collaborate with the Dicastery and the Church to support young couples and families?

Associations already do a great deal through cooperation networks, NGOs and support projects. However, one fundamental area where we can work together is to promote motherhood more. Motherhood is a constitutive dimension of womanhood, a privilege that God has given her. We need to talk more about its beauty, its richness and its profound meaning.

We reflect little on the fact that the life of mothers is a ‘dramatic’ life, in the etymological sense of the term: a life lived intensely, full of profound experiences, joys, sorrows, trust and fears, which generate a new identity in women. It is a privilege to be so close to the mystery of life and to God. This is why it is important in the Church to speak not only of spiritual motherhood, but also of physical motherhood, which must be cherished, understood and valued so that it is loved and desired by new generations of women.

However, today’s young women need to be helped to understand that the desire for motherhood does not arise in women in a self-referential way, but from the couple, in the loving relationship between a man and a woman. The desire for a child arises from love that wants to become fruitful and eternal. It is the same love that, when it cannot biologically generate life, can open itself to adoption, a very high form of generating life in a psychological, moral and spiritual sense.

Many women and children in various parts of the world suffer domestic violence. How can we intervene?

It is urgent to work on prevention through adequate emotional education from childhood onwards, for both boys and girls. Educating them to respect themselves and others, to understand the whole person: body, psyche and spirit.

Violence is not only physical, but also psychological and spiritual. Teaching respect for the whole person means learning to respect the body, feelings, freedom and soul of others.

The catechumenal programmes of preparation for marriage include this education in affectivity from an early stage, with children: education is the only way to prevent the degeneration of relationships, within families and in the relationship between men and women. It is a journey of formation in self-giving, mutual respect and faithful love.

Interview with Gabriella Gambino by Mercè Alonso
Former member of the WUCWO Communication Office
(Original: IT)
(Original: IT)

“Faith must be rediscovered and passed on within the family, from generation to generation” Interview with Gabriella Gambino, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life Gabriella Gambino has been Undersecretary of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life since 2017.
