{"id":19089,"date":"2026-04-10T16:58:40","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T14:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wucwo.org\/?p=19089"},"modified":"2026-04-14T16:35:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T14:35:55","slug":"the-wucwo-observatory-in-asia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wucwo.org\/en\/the-wucwo-observatory-in-asia\/","title":{"rendered":"The WUCWO Observatory in Asia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>The first steps of a new project addressing violence and discrimination against women in Indonesia<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking the first steps of the WUCWO\u2019s World Women\u2019s Observatory (WWO) in Asia, this mission seeks to better understand the reality of violence and discrimination against women, while raising awareness and inspiring action in Indonesia, where WUCWO has a strong presence through its affiliated organisation in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The First Steps of the WUCWO Observatory in Asia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Women\u2019s Observatory (WWO) of WUCWO carried out a field mission to Indonesia with the participation of Isabella Park, Vice President of WUCWO, Lavinia Rocchi Carrera, Secretary General of WUCWO and Patricio Caruso, consultant of the WWO. The team was warmly received by the leadership and members of Wanita Katolik Republik Indonesia, including its President Mrs. Elly Kusumawati Handoko<strong> <\/strong>and Justina Rostiawati, WUCWO\u2019s Board member for Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission began in Bandung, where a focus group with local organizations provided powerful testimonies on how extractive industries are reshaping communities and deepening women\u2019s vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the land is taken, women lose not only their livelihoods, but also their identity and their connection to culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cViolence against women is not separate from these projects\u2014it is part of the system that comes with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants also highlighted how environmental degradation affects daily life, particularly through reduced access to clean water, loss of income, and growing social tensions within families and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During their stay in Bandung, the delegation visited the Eco Camp with one of its founders Father Ferry Sutrisna Wijaya, engaging with local initiatives that promote ecological awareness and community-based sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/wucwo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DSC_0040-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19093\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wucwo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DSC_0040-980x653.jpg 980w, https:\/\/wucwo.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/DSC_0040-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jakarta: Voices from Women Living the Impacts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission continued in Jakarta, where two focus groups were held at the offices of Wanita Katolik Republik Indonesia. These sessions brought together women from across Indonesia, including activists, researchers, and women directly affected by violence and economic vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The testimonies revealed a complex and often invisible reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cViolence is so common that many women no longer recognize it as violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes being hit is seen as normal\u2014something a husband does to \u2018educate\u2019 his wife or children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWomen work all day\u2014at the factory and then at home\u2014but their work is not recognized. When something goes wrong, they are the ones blamed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants also spoke about the impact of extractive industries in increasing social risks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen companies arrive, many men come from outside. With them come prostitution, exploitation, and broken families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYoung girls become pregnant and are abandoned. They carry the consequences alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several testimonies highlighted how economic pressures, cultural norms, and practices such as dowry can reinforce unequal power dynamics and expose women to higher levels of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause the husband\u2019s family has paid, some men feel they own the woman\u2014and can do whatever they want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, women emphasized their exclusion from decision-making processes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are rarely consulted, yet we are the ones who deal with the consequences every day\u2014water, food, children, health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these challenges, the focus groups also highlighted the critical role of local organizations in supporting women, including shelters, accompaniment programs, and advocacy initiatives led by faith-based and civil society groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final day of the visit&nbsp; was dedicated to a working session at the offices of Wanita Katolik, where the team and local partners defined the next steps of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This included the development of a national survey to be launched in May, aiming to reach approximately 1,000 women across Indonesia, with the goal of gathering their experiences, voices, and perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This mission reaffirmed a key principle of the WWO: real change begins by listening\u2014carefully and respectfully\u2014to women\u2019s lived realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Patricio Caruso\u00a0| WWO Consultant<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first steps of a new project addressing violence and discrimination against women in Indonesia Taking the first steps of the WUCWO\u2019s World Women\u2019s Observatory (WWO) in Asia, this mission seeks to better understand the reality of violence and discrimination against women, while raising awareness and inspiring action in Indonesia, where WUCWO has a strong [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":19090,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[147],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19089","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-wwo"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
