On September 1, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Creation, which marks the beginning of the Season of Creation, a period that extends until October 4, the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi.
This time invites us to come together in prayer and action for our Common Home, renewing our commitment to caring for creation and to living a more sustainable lifestyle.

A reflection for this Season of Creation by Karen De Sousa, Coordinator of WUCWO’s Ecology Working Group
As we reflect on the final year of our campaign for WUCWO women to plant a tree for our planet, we celebrate 67,361 new trees absorbing 1,684,025 kg of carbon dioxide each year, the same as powering about 240 homes or driving 366 cars per year.
An achievement to be proud of but we still have more to do.
Pope Francis’ encyclical calls us to have a change of heart, to change how we think, how we live. He called on us to live more simply. Saint Oscar Romero said this too and we remember his famous words: “Aspire not to HAVE more, but to BE more”.
This Season of Creation we are asked to focus on water, how precious it is. Planting our trees helps stop soil erosion, helps to improve soil and allow for water to soak into the earth rather than running off and flooding. They provide us with shade and cool us.
Changing our habits now to conserve our use of water will be essential to our future.
