On May 29, the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life appointed Monsignor Melchor José Sánchez de Toca y Alameda as the new Ecclesiastical Assistant, to provide spiritual and pastoral accompaniment to WUCWO’s mission in service of women and the Church throughout the world.

We warmly welcome him to our family!

He has been a priest of the Archdiocese of Toledo (Spain) since 1993 and, since June 2023, has served as Relator of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

He holds a Doctorate in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University (2006), with a dissertation on the dialogue between faith and culture at the Second Vatican Council, and a Licentiate in Biblical Theology (1996).

Throughout his career, he has carried out extensive service to the Holy See, particularly in the field of dialogue between faith, culture, and science. He served as Undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture (2004–2022) and coordinated the STOQ project, dedicated to fostering dialogue between the natural sciences and faith in the Pontifical Universities of Rome.

He also promoted initiatives related to sport as a means of encounter, education, and evangelisation, serving as founder and first president of Athletica Vaticana, the Vatican’s official sports association.

“We give thanks to the Lord for this appointment and welcome Father Melchor with joy as he begins his service within WUCWO. We trust that his spiritual and pastoral guidance will be a valuable aid in strengthening our mission in the service of women and the Church throughout the world,” said Mónica Santamarina, President General of WUCWO, who extended a warm welcome to him.
