From January 18 to 25, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated, a time in which Christian communities around the world come together in prayer, reflection, and commitment to fraternity and peace. This observance seeks to remind us that, beyond differences, faith can be a bridge that brings us closer as brothers and sisters in Christ.
In this context, WUCWO wishes to emphasise that religious freedom is a fundamental human right, which is part of the dignity of every person and of the culture of every people. In fact, it is one of the Resolutions—areas of action—that we have for the 2023–2027 period. We are committed to promoting respect for diversity, defending religious freedom, working against discrimination, denouncing violations of this right, and fostering interdenominational and interreligious dialogue as a path toward fraternity and peace.
Mónica Santamarina, President of WUCWO, states on this occasion:
“During this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, I invite you to strengthen our prayer, aware that, as Pope Leo XIV asks of us, “our commitment to unity must be coherently accompanied by a commitment to peace and justice in the world.” Aware of this, within WUCWO we have committed ourselves to religious freedom, interreligious dialogue, and ecumenism. In a world marked by diversity, we promote at all levels a culture of inclusion and peace, where faith becomes a bridge of encounter between people and peoples, and where the richness of welcoming and valuing differences is recognized. Let us strengthen our work, always looking at what unites us beyond what separates us, and making dialogue a way of life that transforms us all from the heart!”
This Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of mutual respect, fraternity, and peace, recalling that religious freedom and interdenominational dialogue are essential pillars for coexistence in a diverse world.
